At Zhejiang University’s Laboratory of Art and Archaeology Image, experts are using AI to digitally restore the original colours of historic artworks.

By combining years of knowledge and techniques into one AI model, researchers have created a powerful restoration assistant.

In the past, restoring ancient paintings required a lot of manual work. Conservators analyzed pigments and used digital tools themselves. Now, AI technology is making the process much easier and more efficient.

Advanced algorithms can now analyze the composition of pigments, the historical context of the work, and the unique style of the artist. Based on this information, the AI creates a simulation of the original colours. Conservators then check and fine-tune this simulation in the lab.

The research team also works with traditional methods to recreate historical pigments, applying them to silk and paper. This hands-on process helps ensure that the digital restorations stay true to the original artwork.

So far, the team has restored over 100 ancient paintings using AI. They are also gathering a wealth of data on colour compositions, materials, and artistic styles to improve their AI model further.

Their ultimate goal is to create a detailed database covering the entire history of Chinese painting, which will lead to even better restorations in the future.
