Reviving Hope: New Ceasefire Plan Offers Path to Peace in Israel-Gaza Conflict

Hamas has expressed support for a renewed ceasefire in Gaza, thanks to a proposal from mediators that would release five more hostages to Israel in exchange for a 50-day truce. Khalil al-Hayyam, a senior Hamas leader, confirmed the group’s agreement to the draft deal presented by Egyptian and Qatari mediators.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office also acknowledged the proposal and mentioned a “counter-proposal” sent to the mediators in collaboration with the United States. If both sides can agree to the terms, the truce could align with the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, starting this Sunday.

On Saturday, Netanyahu consulted with his team about the ceasefire. However, while details of Israel’s counter-offer remain unclear, the US has not yet made any public statements regarding the situation. Just days prior, Israeli forces had initiated a ground operation in Rafah and continued air strikes across Gaza. This followed the end of a previous ceasefire that began on January 19, which both sides failed to extend despite initial agreements.

During the initial ceasefire, Hamas released 33 hostages. Current estimates suggest that the group is still holding about 59 hostages, though not all are confirmed alive. Hamas has previously insisted on adhering to the original deal for a second phase, which would involve the release of all remaining hostages in exchange for the withdrawal of Israeli forces. Unfortunately, those negotiations never took off.

Instead of allowing for an extended ceasefire, Israel and the US proposed continuing the terms of the first phase, despite no assurances for peace. After what it described as Hamas’s rejection of an extension, Israel resumed military strikes on March 18. Since then, air strikes have reportedly led to over 900 fatalities in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Families of the remaining hostages have criticized Netanyahu for jeopardizing their loved ones’ lives by breaking the ceasefire.

In a poignant reminder of the ongoing crisis, one of the hostages, Elkana Bohbot, appeared in a newly released video pleading for his freedom.

This conflict escalated dramatically on October 7, 2023, when Hamas conducted an attack in southern Israel, resulting in around 1,200 deaths and the capture of 251 individuals. In retaliation, Israel launched a significant military offensive, which has reportedly resulted in over 50,000 Palestinian deaths, illustrating the severity of the ongoing violence.
