During the 18th National Council on Environment exhibition in Abuja, Executive Director Mrs. Patience Chat Bature highlighted the importance of reforestation and integrated farming systems. This event was centered around the theme, “Tackling the Triple Planetary Crisis: Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss, and Pollution for Sustainable Development.”
Supported by the UN’s Global Environment Facility, NDF is working to combat climate change through a variety of initiatives. One key project involves tree-planting campaigns aimed at restoring lost forests and sequestering carbon in local communities.
Mrs. Bature introduced their innovation: Moringa Organic Fertilizer. This product leverages the nutrient-rich properties of the Moringa tree. Unlike chemical fertilizers, which can harm the soil, this organic solution helps heal the land. She emphasized a new farming approach where crops, trees, and livestock all work together, moving us away from harmful practices.
At the exhibition, NDF showcased another solution: turning agricultural waste like husks and stalks into high-energy briquettes. These briquettes serve as a cleaner alternative to traditional charcoal. This not only helps reduce deforestation but also improves air quality in rural homes.
Recent studies show that regenerative agriculture can increase crop yields and enhance soil health. According to the United Nations, sustainable farming practices can mitigate climate change effects and contribute to food security. Companies and countries adopting such practices reported a 20% increase in productivity over three years.
