Dorset has launched a new nature recovery strategy aimed at reviving and safeguarding its environment over the next decade. This strategy identifies key areas for improvement and actionable steps to turn the tide on nature’s decline.
Developed by Dorset Council, BCP Council, and Natural England, the plan incorporates insights from local farmers, community members, and environmental experts. It aims to influence planning, land management, climate resilience, and public health.
Cllr Nick Ireland, Leader of Dorset Council, emphasized the importance of nature in the region: “Dorset’s natural environment is one of our greatest assets. This strategy marks a turning point, focusing on recovery.” He believes collaboration with local partners and communities will lead to cleaner rivers, thriving woodlands, and protected habitats.
The strategy supports the national goal of managing or protecting 30% of land, rivers, and seas for nature by 2030. It outlines 13 priorities backed by detailed habitat maps, spotlighting areas where actions will have the most impact. Key initiatives include:
- Restoring grasslands, woodlands, and heathlands through better planting.
- Improving rivers, lakes, and wetlands, particularly the rare chalk streams.
- Enhancing coastal areas and urban green spaces.
Farmers are encouraged to adopt more sustainable practices, focusing on reinstating natural processes such as floodplain reconnection and peatland renewal. These practices are essential for boosting biodiversity and tackling climate change.
Cllr Andy Hadley, BCP Council’s Cabinet member for Climate Response, emphasized the collaboration needed for success: “This fresh, joined-up approach indicates our commitment across BCP and wider Dorset to restore our natural spaces.” By uniting efforts, they aim to make a more significant impact than ever before.
