The day the Humane Ai Pin shut down was also a spark of new life for some users.
On February 28, just after noon Pacific time, Humane turned off its servers for the Ai Pin, effectively rendering the $700 device useless. Just minutes later, in a Discord voice chat named “The death of Ai Pin,” a savvy hacker shared a secret: he discovered how to bypass Humane’s security codes.
The Ai Pin was supposed to be an innovative gadget. It was a small, clip-on device designed to help you perform phone tasks like taking photos and sending messages, but even more exciting, it promised holographic displays. It launched in April 2024 but quickly fell flat. Users found its features lacking, and the product faced constant ridicule. In fact, Humane managed to process more returns than sales.
By February 2025, less than a year after its debut, Humane announced it would shut down services and sell off key components to HP. Refunds were only available for buyers within the last 90 days—leaving many disappointed.
For devoted fans, this news hit hard. In the final week before the shutdown, users on forums went through a rollercoaster of emotions: anger, sorrow, and loss.
“We’re super bummed,” said @23box_, a user who had embraced the Ai Pin from the start. He used it daily until it stopped working. “This was a unique device that we really wanted to succeed.”
On February 27, Humane’s official Discord was shut down. Thankfully, @23box_ had already created a new Discord server called reHumane, where fans could discuss the device and explore ways to keep it alive, away from corporate oversight.
“We didn’t want them to know what we were doing,” he explained.
Marcel, another user, also viewed the end of the Ai Pin as an opportunity. Known for his tech skills, he had previously built his own version of a gaming console from different devices. He is one of the few who successfully transferred the Rabbit R1 source code onto an Android phone, much to the annoyance of its makers.
