A newly discovered fossil of a Paranthropus jawbone is changing our understanding of early humans. Found in Ethiopia’s Afar region, this jawbone dates back around 2.6 million years. Chemical analysis of the tooth enamel revealed that Paranthropus likely ate grasses and sedges. This wider diet supports the idea that it was not strictly limited to one food source.
Additionally, this jawbone was found in a landscape where early Homo, the genus that includes modern humans, also lived. This overlap is significant.
