An AI robot named Ace has made waves in the world of table tennis by competing against top players. Developed by Sony AI, Ace won three out of five matches, showcasing impressive skills. Although it lost two contests to professional players, its performance was remarkable, especially given the quick reactions required in the sport.

In official matches, Ace demonstrated a strong understanding of spin and made difficult shots look easy, including a rapid backspin that surprised even seasoned pros. Peter Dürr, director of Sony AI, mentioned that Ace has improved significantly since initial matches. The robot learned through 3,000 hours of simulations, perfecting its technique and decision-making.

Unlike traditional robots, Ace has an eight-jointed arm on a mobile base, allowing it to move freely. It uses multiple cameras to analyze the entire playing field, tracking the ball’s position and spin before making a shot. This setup helps Ace respond faster than a human would, focusing on the ball’s logo to determine its rotation and speed.

While Ace has strengths, it also has weaknesses. In its early stages, it struggled with slow balls and occasionally returned them weakly. However, it adapted quickly, excelling at tricky shots when the ball caught the net. Elite player Rui Takenaka remarked that Ace was particularly challenging when faced with complex spins, but was easier to handle with simple shots, highlighting the nuances of strategy in table tennis.

Notably, Ace’s lack of human features—like eyes or body language—adds to its challenge. Players can’t read its intentions, making it a unique opponent. According to Kinjiro Nakamura, a former Olympic player, Ace executed shots once thought impossible, inspiring human players to improve.

Experts like Jan Peters, a robotics professor in Germany, commended the project but pointed out that mastering table tennis won’t solve all robotics challenges, such as object manipulation. He anticipates that breakthroughs in AI will significantly change the world in the coming decade, similar to how ChatGPT made an impact in 2022.
