Innovative Shift to Hydrogen Fuel from Coal-Bed Methane
In Dhanbad, a group of chemical engineering students at the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) is making waves by turning a harmful greenhouse gas into clean fuel. Kailash Krishna, Nitin Gaur, and Devashish Das have developed a method to convert coal-bed methane into hydrogen fuel, which can power cars that typically run on compressed natural gas (CNG).
Coal-bed methane is a byproduct of coal mining and is known to be about 25 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. Professor Ejaz Ahmed, who guided the students, emphasized the environmental impact of this gas. He noted that capturing just one kilogram of coal-bed methane can reduce pollution by the same amount as 25 kilograms of carbon dioxide.
The students’ process involves purifying coal-bed methane, then breaking it down to extract hydrogen and carbon nanotubes. The hydrogen can be used as fuel without any modifications to existing CNG vehicles, enhancing their fuel efficiency.
The carbon nanotubes produced are remarkable materials used in industries, including bulletproof vest manufacturing, with a market price soaring to around Rs 5 lakh per kilogram. Since hydrogen is extracted during this process, its production costs are nearly negligible.
“Using this previously harmful product, we’re forging a cleaner energy path,” Professor Ahmed stated. Devashish Das highlighted that while CNG vehicles produce less carbon dioxide than traditional petrol and diesel cars, they still contribute to pollution. In contrast, shifting to hydrogen fuel could be a game-changer in reducing emissions.
The urgency of this innovation is backed by studies indicating the growing need for cleaner energy sources. According to the International Energy Agency, the demand for hydrogen fuel is expected to triple by 2030 as countries push for sustainable energy solutions.
Coal-bed methane, once overlooked, is now gaining importance in countries like the United States and Australia, further solidifying its potential as an energy source.
This breakthrough from IIT (ISM) is not just a technical achievement; it could herald a significant shift toward greener energy solutions in transportation and beyond. The students embody a spirit of innovation that may pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
