Doug White served 14 years in the Air Force and spent over a decade as a Sergeant and Deputy in Hillsborough County. He knows firsthand the deep scars that come from witnessing human tragedy daily.
Doug described it as having "a front row seat to the show you never wanted to see." He faced trauma from events like child abuse, domestic violence, and suicide. Yet, as a leader, he hid his pain, putting on a brave face while urging others to seek help. "I told my squad, ‘It’s okay not to be okay.’ But I was the biggest hypocrite," he admitted.
Over time, the weight of his experiences became unbearable. He suffered from sleeplessness, nightmares, and constant pain. One night, feeling hopeless, he found himself in a dark place, contemplating suicide. It was a wake-up call that led him to seek help.
Doug explored various treatments—therapy, light therapy, and physical activity—but nothing worked. Then, he discovered eTMS or Electroencephalogram Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. This innovative therapy aims to restore brain balance. Dr. Julie Kim, the medical director of eTMS Florida, explained, "80 to 90% of our patients respond to treatment, often seeing a significant reduction in anxiety and depression."
eTMS involves mapping brain activity to identify areas needing care. Each patient receives a personalized protocol, targeting specific brain areas to improve function. Doug underwent 20 sessions, each lasting 15 minutes, and was amazed by the results. "My headaches vanished, and my sleep improved. The nightmares? I barely have them now," he said.
Florida Congressman Danny Alvarez, a veteran himself, has been a strong advocate for better mental health support for veterans and first responders. He helped secure state funding so they can access eTMS treatment at no cost. "Our veterans’ lives are worth everything," he emphasized.
Since the program began, over 180 veterans and first responders have benefited from eTMS in Florida. Six locations are currently open, with more on the way, making treatment accessible for those in need.
Doug’s message to anyone struggling? "Don’t wait until you’re in crisis. Reach out for help. You’ll inspire others to do the same and claim the life you deserve."
