IOWA CITY, Iowa – Big changes might be on the way for students applying to the University of Iowa (UI).
This comes after a record number of applications this year. Brent Gage, the Vice President of Enrollment at UI, shared this news during a recent meeting with the Faculty Senate. He explained that due to the surge in applications, the university may need to rethink its admissions process.
Currently, UI uses rolling deadlines, where each application is reviewed as it arrives. Gage suggested shifting to a fixed schedule for admissions instead. He believes that standardized tests, like the ACT and SAT, may become more critical in the application process.
The Iowa Board of Regents first waived the standardized test requirement for Iowa public universities during the pandemic in 2020 and made that change permanent in early 2022. Gage pointed out that the university is nearing its capacity. If too many students enroll, it could impact financial resources due to the cost of faculty and more class sections. He noted, “Eventually, good enrollment can lead to losses because of expenses.”
Whether the university can reinstate the ACT or SAT requirement remains uncertain. This decision might fall to the Iowa Board of Regents.
Studies show that standardized testing can reflect a student’s readiness for college, but opinions on its effectiveness vary widely. For example, a recent survey found that 60% of high school counselors believe standardized tests do not accurately measure student potential. This debate continues as schools adapt to changing educational landscapes.
