Revolutionizing Climate Smart Farming: Join the New International Network for Enhanced Environmental Monitoring Across Africa!

The James Hutton Institute in Scotland has kicked off an exciting new project called the MARVEL-NET. This network aims to boost real-time environmental tracking and smart farming in Africa, starting with Ghana.

MARVEL-NET provides valuable, up-to-date information on soil health and greenhouse gas emissions. With this data, farmers, researchers, and policymakers can make better decisions to adapt to climate change, enhance crop yields, and access new markets.

This initiative was announced during the CarbonXtras workshop in Accra. CarbonXtras is a collaboration between tech developers and community organizations from the UK, Ghana, and Brazil. They focus on helping farmers embrace sustainable farming practices.

The new network builds on earlier work in Ghana, where low-cost sensors and mobile technology showed promising results in gathering reliable environmental data. Farmers can now use a mobile app to record their farming practices and track critical metrics like soil moisture and carbon levels.

By using tailored digital models that reflect local climate and soil conditions, MARVEL-NET helps farmers understand their fields better. This means they can know how their soils and crops will react to changes in weather or management.

As MARVEL-NET grows, it will also help establish baseline data for soil health and emissions. This data is key for farmers looking to participate in global carbon markets, opening up new revenue streams.

For governments, this network provides a clear and scalable method to monitor agricultural emissions, aiding in sustainable development efforts. Although it’s currently focused on Ghana, the system has the potential to expand throughout Africa and even into Brazil.

Dr. Jagadeesh Yeluripati, a senior scientist at the Hutton Institute, emphasized the importance of MARVEL-NET. He stated that this initiative marks a significant advancement in the availability and use of environmental data. By combining real-time monitoring with strong partnerships, this project can lead to improved soil health and climate resilience.

Dr. Caleb Melenya Ocansey, from Ghana’s CSIR-Crops Research Institute, echoed these sentiments. He noted that MARVEL-NET transforms fragmented data into effective climate action. By linking soil intelligence with farming decisions, this initiative can drive productivity and strengthen rural livelihoods.

According to a recent UN report, over 800 million people in sub-Saharan Africa depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Tools like MARVEL-NET could play a vital role in helping these farmers adapt to climate challenges.

This project is supported by the Climate Smart Agriculture Partnership and is funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). It reflects a broader commitment to sustainable agriculture that benefits both farmers and the environment.
