In a big step for India’s defense industry, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has finalized contracts worth about ₹975 crore for TRAWL Assembly systems meant for T-72 and T-90 tanks. This agreement, signed with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Private Limited, aims to enhance India’s military capabilities.
The TRAWL Assembly, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), helps the Indian Army clear minefields. It creates safe paths for vehicles in areas lined with anti-tank mines, boosting safety and operational efficiency during combat.
This procurement falls under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category. It’s a key move toward making India less reliant on imported military equipment. This initiative aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat program, which seeks to foster self-reliance in defense.
Experts highlight that projects like this can significantly drive job creation. Not only will it open up direct employment opportunities, but it will also support small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by involving them in the supply chain, fostering local innovation.
BEML has recently announced a separate order worth ₹590 crore for TRAWL assemblies, marking another milestone in strengthening defense preparedness.
Interestingly, recent statistics show a growing trend in public support for indigenous manufacturing. A survey indicated that over 70% of Indians feel it is crucial for national security. This reflects a broader understanding that a self-reliant defense ecosystem is vital for the country’s safety and economic stability.
