Grubhub is testing a new drone delivery service in New Jersey, partnering with Dexa to deliver food from Wonder’s Green Brook location. This initiative is exciting because it’s the first time drones will be used for food delivery in the state.
Starting March 18, customers living within 2.5 miles of Wonder can place orders through the Grubhub app and choose drone delivery. Grubhub assures that there won’t be any extra fees besides the standard delivery costs. This three-month test will integrate drone technology into Grubhub’s existing services.
Customers can select from 15 different dining options at Wonder, all prepared in a single location. This setup, combined with drone delivery, aims to provide quick and quality meals.
Abhishek “PJ” Poykayil from Grubhub mentions that this partnership makes a big leap in delivery innovation. He notes, “We’re proud to introduce a faster and more efficient way for New Jersey diners to experience food delivery.”
The drones, specifically the DE-2020 model from Dexa, are designed for safe and efficient delivery. Dexa is one of a few U.S. companies that operates FAA-certified delivery drones, ensuring all flights adhere to strict safety protocols. Before each delivery, crews ensure the food is securely packaged and compliant with safety standards.
These drones operate using advanced technology, allowing for precise delivery while minimizing noise. Customers will receive real-time updates, including GPS tracking and estimated arrival times, through the Grubhub platform.
Beth Flippo, CEO of Dexa, emphasizes that consumers today crave quicker and more reliable delivery options. She believes this collaboration highlights the potential of technology to transform how food services operate.
After the test period, Grubhub plans to assess the program’s success and potentially expand drone delivery to other restaurants.
With increased interest in drone technology, it’s worth noting that a recent survey indicated that 53% of consumers would be interested in using drone delivery services. As technology advances, we might see more innovative delivery methods shaping the restaurant industry.
