MIAMI VALLEY, Ohio (WKEF) — Firefighters face tough, physical challenges every day. To help them stay safe, two local companies, Cornerstone Research Group and VigiLife, have created the Exposure Awareness System. This system provides real-time information on firefighters’ health.
According to VigiLife’s Vice President for Products and Partnerships, this technology offers valuable data to fire departments.
“They’re discovering new details about their environments, stressors, and exposures,” explained Ward.
Recent wildfires in Los Angeles highlight just how risky firefighting can be. The conditions can be harsh, even for the fittest individuals.
The Exposure Awareness System uses wearable sensors, like smartwatches, to track various health indicators, including heart rate and core temperature. It also monitors air quality, noise, and other environmental factors.
“This helps firefighters understand how their bodies are reacting while they work,” noted Mark Cridge from Cornerstone Research Group.
An app linked to the system delivers real-time alerts, even tracking how many particles they are breathing in.
“Firefighters can grasp the impact of their work and environment, helping them prevent issues like heat stress and respiratory problems,” said Ward.
This system allows incident commanders to see how the fire is affecting their teams, enabling better decision-making during operations.
“Taking action right away can save lives,” Cridge added.
Ward expressed hopes that this technology will soon be integrated into firefighting gear, leading to even better safety measures on the job.
