Environment Minister Kim Wan-seop recently held a press conference at the Sejong Government Complex. He announced exciting updates on several key initiatives for the Ministry of Environment in the coming months.
One significant plan is the introduction of a disposable cup deposit system in places like amusement parks and cafe areas, such as Everland and Seoul Land. Under this system, people will receive their deposit back when they return their used cups. This initiative is currently in place in Sejong and Jeju.
During the press conference, Minister Kim noted that discussions with the amusement parks about the new system are progressing well. He mentioned that an agreement would be signed in March with facilities participating in the program, along with a clear model for how the deposit system will work.
The Ministry aims to tailor the deposit system to different regions and facilities. They may allow options such as using reusable containers instead of disposable cups or offering discounts for returning cups. Minister Kim assured that support would be provided to pass the necessary laws for these changes.
In addition to the cup deposit system, Minister Kim outlined other significant tasks for the Ministry this year. Plans include supporting victims of humidifier disinfectants, working on climate response dams, and improving water intake options from the Nakdonggang River. For those affected by humidifier disinfectants, the Ministry aims to create flexible settlement options that suit victims’ needs. They will also select a site for climate response dams next month based on local demand.
Furthermore, Minister Kim highlighted the importance of restructuring the agency to form a dedicated Ministry of Climate and Environment, calling for a ‘climate think tank.’ He stressed that as global concerns about climate change grow, having a dedicated ministry can enhance the country’s capability to address these issues. He believes it’s essential to adapt the law to reflect this need for a focused approach on climate matters.
