Revolutionizing Healthcare: Advocate Health Announces Innovative Drone Delivery Network for Lab Specimens

Advocate Health is set to launch a unique hospital-based drone delivery network. This network will transport medications, medical supplies, and critical lab samples. With a partnership with Zipline, the goal is to complete over 100,000 deliveries each year once fully operational.

The first drone flights will kick off in 2027, starting in Charlotte, NC. After that, Advocate Health plans to expand the service to Chicago and Milwaukee, with further developments in Georgia aimed at helping rural patients access care.

For clinical laboratories, this network promises faster transportation of specimens, helping to speed up result turnaround times. Fast results are vital for effective patient diagnosis and treatment.

“Advocate Health is changing how care is delivered,” says Collin Lane, an executive at Advocate Health.

Here’s how it works: A Zipline drone picks up an order, like a lab sample, from an Advocate Health site. The drone flies approximately 300 feet in the air, and when it arrives at its destination, a pod containing the order lowers to the ground. This system is designed to handle bad weather and high winds.

The drones are approved by the Federal Aviation Administration and include safety systems that ensure reliable operation. They are also designed to minimize noise and avoid populated areas.

Zipline’s managing director, Hillary Brendzel, mentions that this initiative signifies a significant shift in how healthcare systems serve communities. It offers a reliable way to transport lab specimens and supplies, especially when pharmacies or traditional transport are unavailable.

“By thinking innovatively, we’re transforming how patients access prescriptions and health supplies while enhancing lab delivery efficiency,” Lane adds.

In 2021, a survey showed that 70% of healthcare professionals believe drone delivery could enhance patient care (source: Healthcare Tech Report). As technology continues to evolve, we might see more healthcare systems embracing innovative solutions like this one to better serve their communities.

This drone network could set a new standard in healthcare, combining speed, efficiency, and safety in an increasingly demanding environment.
