Noida: Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently opened India’s first tempered glass manufacturing plant. This facility is a collaboration between Optiemus Infracom, an Indian electronics firm, and Corning, a global leader in materials science.
Vaishnaw expressed his enthusiasm for this partnership, highlighting that the electronics ecosystem in India is rapidly evolving. In the past 11 years, the country’s electronics manufacturing has surged six times, reaching around ₹11.5 lakh crore, with exports around ₹3.5 lakh crore. This growth resonates with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the industry.
“We aim to produce all mobile components in India soon,” the minister stated. He also emphasized the importance of fostering research and development in the country to establish India as a global player.
This plant, which has an initial investment of ₹70 crore, will transform raw materials into high-quality tempered glass. During Phase 1, it will produce 25 million units annually, generating jobs for over 600 individuals. In Phase 2, the capacity will grow to 200 million units per year with an additional ₹800 crore investment, creating 4,500 more jobs.
The market for tempered glass in India is substantial, estimated at over 500 million pieces with a retail value of around ₹20,000 crore. Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Infracom, noted that this development is pivotal for the Indian electronics industry and aligns with the ‘Make in India’ vision, especially since the country has historically depended on imported tempered glass despite being a major mobile phone market.
This new venture is just one step in a broader trend toward enhancing local manufacturing capabilities. According to a recent report by Deloitte, the global semiconductor market is expected to surpass $1 trillion by 2030, indicating a significant opportunity for India to establish itself further in technology manufacturing.
