Breathe Well ConneCTion: Bringing Lung Cancer Screenings to Louisiana

The Breathe Well ConneCTion is designed to deliver low-dose CT lung screenings right where people gather—at local festivals, health fairs, and various community events. In doing so, it complements the health system’s existing Be Well Bus, which has been providing mobile mammograms since May 2021.
Joan Coffman, the President and CEO of St. Tammany Health System, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “Our mission is to provide world-class healthcare close to home,” she said. The Breathe Well ConneCTion embodies this commitment, making life-saving screenings more reachable.
The mobile unit features advanced technology that not only screens for lung cancer but also detects coronary calcium levels and evaluates bone density using AI solutions. This cutting-edge approach allows for a comprehensive assessment of an individual’s health.
Rich Mauti, a local sports figure and supporter of cancer awareness, shared his enthusiasm. He noted that the mobile unit could conduct up to 3,000 screenings annually. “If we save just one life, it’s worth it,” he expressed. Mauti’s family-run Mauti Cancer Fund contributed $500,000 to help fund this initiative, showing community support for health advancement.
This initiative comes at a crucial time, as Louisiana has struggled with early cancer diagnosis rates. Statistics reveal that the state ranks low in national health metrics. By increasing access to health screenings, St. Tammany Health System aims to change this narrative.
