In a significant move for India’s maritime industry, Neptunus Power Plant Services has teamed up with the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). They signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently during Maritime India Week 2025. This partnership aims to bring data-driven maintenance and digital diagnostics to shipping in India.
With this agreement, IRS has granted ‘Type Approval Certification’ to Neptunus for its VIB 360 engine condition monitoring system. This marks a first for India—these are the first IRS-certified condition-monitoring technologies for marine diesel engines developed entirely at home.
Traditionally, ship maintenance followed fixed timelines, which can be both expensive and inefficient. Neptunus’s VIB 360 allows for condition-based maintenance (CBM). By using this system, fleets can reduce unplanned downtime and cut maintenance costs by up to 30%. This not only optimizes fuel use but also lowers emissions.
Uday Purohit, MD and CEO of Neptunus, emphasized the importance of this Type Approval. He sees it as validation of India’s ability to innovate in maritime technology. Together, Neptunus and IRS aim to create standards that help the maritime sector transition to real-time, data-driven maintenance practices.
This shift is part of a larger vision for India’s maritime future. With a growing focus on sustainability, data-led maintenance can enhance safety and efficiency across global shipping fleets.
A recent survey by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) highlighted that digital technologies could reduce the global shipping industry’s greenhouse gas emissions by up to 30% by 2030. India’s move towards data-driven solutions could play a crucial role in achieving these goals.
