New Support for Moms in Baton Rouge
In Baton Rouge, Woman’s Hospital has launched a new resource for pregnant and postpartum women facing mental health challenges. This specialized perinatal mental health unit, which opened in 2024, is a first for Louisiana.
Mental health issues after childbirth are more common than many realize. Experts estimate that about one in seven women experiences postpartum symptoms. That means around half a million women in the U.S. each year struggle with these issues. Cheri Johnson, the hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer, emphasizes the significance of this statistic.
Since its launch, the unit has welcomed over 200 patients not just from Louisiana, but from neighboring states like Texas and Mississippi. The program stands out because its focus is solely on women, providing a tailored approach to their healing process.
Inside the unit, women work alongside a dedicated team of psychologists, therapists, and social workers. This team collaborates with each patient to create a personalized care plan for recovery at home. Dr. Kelly Cannon notes that without this unit, many women would miss out on the comprehensive care they urgently require.
The hospital encourages women to voice their struggles and urges family and friends to be vigilant for signs of postpartum challenges. Johnson highlights the pressures of motherhood, stating, “Bringing a new life into the world is tough, and we need to support women on this journey.”
The Women’s PMHU is among only a handful of similar units nationwide, serving women from pregnancy through the first year after childbirth or following a pregnancy loss. This focus on women’s mental health is crucial during such transformative and often stressful times.
In the past, conversations around postpartum mental health were often kept silent. Now, with resources like this, women are getting the help they need, breaking the stigma that surrounds these issues.
