NYC Health + Hospitals has made a significant investment in improving patient care with a $30.5 million upgrade to high-tech hospital beds. Over 2,000 beds have been replaced in just 11 months, enhancing comfort and safety for patients.
The new Hillrom Centrella smart beds feature alarms and audio messages to prevent falls. They’re designed to help patients stay safe and comfortable during their stay. Additionally, the Intensive Care Units now have Hillrom Progressa beds, which allow patients to sit up easily. This design helps patients get out of bed with less strain on the nursing staff. Certain settings even help clear fluid from patients’ lungs.
Both bed types tackle the issue of bed sores by rotating patients and using a special mattress that manages air pressure and moisture.
Danielle DiBari, Senior Vice President of Business Operations, emphasizes that these beds represent the future of hospital care. “Bed sores and falls are two major challenges for healthcare providers,” she said. “These innovations will significantly enhance patient safety and comfort.”
Nurses appreciate the upgrades. Maita Ramos, RN, notes that the loud alarms and bilingual communication features help engage patients effectively. Patients also enjoy the convenience of charging ports for their phones, making it easier to stay connected with loved ones.
The Supply Chain department at NYC Health + Hospitals oversees a large budget of $2.5 billion to procure necessary equipment and medications for over 1 million patients each year.
