Revolutionizing Shipping: How a Mining Company is Reviving Ancient Technology for Next-Gen Cargo Ships

A shipping vessel named Sohar Max is making waves with its new 114-foot rotor sails, which help lower fuel consumption. This innovation is being reported by Interesting Engineering.

The Sohar Max, owned by Omani shipping company Asyad and operated by Brazilian mining giant Vale, expects to reduce fuel usage by up to 6%. This could mean cut emissions of around 3,300 tons each year.

Rodrigo Bermelho, Vale’s Director of Shipping, noted that the company has focused on energy-efficient ships since 2010. Recently, they’ve pushed for more wind energy in their operations. This move is a significant step toward reducing the carbon footprint of shipping iron ore.

Vale’s operations are crucial for delivering minerals that are essential in battery production, which play a key role in the transition to cleaner energy. The U.K.-based company Anemoi handled the design and installation of these sails.

Nick Contopoulos from Anemoi commented on the importance of this project, stating it highlights how wind energy can significantly impact even large cargo vessels.

“Installing our Rotor Sails on this scale is a proud moment,” he added, referring to their advanced technology and commitment to sustainability in maritime shipping.

Shipping by boat is already one of the cleaner transport methods, but innovations like these continue to improve efficiency. Some ships can operate solely on wind power, while many others are now adding rotor sails for better performance. Hydrogen fuel is also being explored as a way to further reduce emissions.

Beyond environmental benefits, retrofitting ships with these technologies can save companies significant amounts on fuel—allowing them to offer more competitive prices on their goods.

Vale and Anemoi are looking to implement another rotor sail retrofit by September 2025.
