Revolutionizing Soldier Safety: Indian Army Unveils ‘MShield 2.0’ to Combat Honey Trap Espionage

Jammu: The Indian Army has introduced MShield 2.0, a new mobile app designed to protect soldiers from espionage, especially from tactics like “honey traps” used by adversaries, primarily Pakistan.

This app helps prevent attempts to extract sensitive information through deceptive interactions. In the past, these tactics have targeted soldiers stationed along sensitive borders, leading to serious security concerns.

Reports have shown that Pakistan has frequently employed honey traps, which involve romantic or misleading relationships aimed at compromising Indian soldiers. These incidents have sometimes resulted in the accidental release of classified information.

To tackle this issue, the Army’s cybersecurity team developed MShield 2.0. This app monitors soldiers’ online activity in real-time, ensuring that sensitive data isn’t shared, whether on purpose or by accident.

MShield 2.0 is only accessible to authorized personnel. It sends alerts if a soldier downloads untrusted apps or interacts with suspicious contacts. The app is also capable of identifying “PIO calls”—a term for secretive communications often related to honey traps—and flags these for review. Senior officials have assured that the app works quietly to protect privacy while ensuring security.

An Army official shared, “Since launching MShield 2.0, we haven’t seen any cases of honey traps. It acts like a digital watchdog, allowing us to prevent threats before they can escalate.”

Current Use and Future Plans
The app is currently being tested by the Romeo Force, a specialized unit in high-risk areas. Captain Shivani Tiwari, who is leading the project, stated that they plan to roll it out to the entire Army soon. “This technology is a game-changer for the safety of our personnel and our national security,” she said.

MShield 2.0 not only defends against external threats but also educates soldiers on how to be digitally aware and vigilant.
