As Australia faces a major fuel crisis, a groundbreaking shift is occurring in the transportation sector. An electric truck is set to make its inaugural journey from Sydney to Canberra, marking a significant milestone for an Aussie startup aiming to electrify long-haul trucking.
The journey will cover 290 kilometers, powered entirely by renewable energy, costing roughly one-third of what it would for a standard diesel truck. According to Dan Bleakley, the CEO of New Energy Transport, this journey demonstrates the viability of electric trucks on Australian roads. The company plans to roll out a fleet of 20 electric trucks by next year, with a new depot under construction.
This initiative comes at a time when inquiries for electric and hybrid vehicles are soaring. After intense global instability — particularly from recent conflicts affecting oil supplies — customers are eager for alternatives. For instance, BYD, a Chinese EV producer, reported a 50% increase in customer inquiries since the onset of the Iran conflict, which has significantly impacted oil prices.
Interestingly, electric-only vehicles are becoming more appealing, especially priced around $30,000. Increased fuel costs have also catalyzed a surge in interest. According to Pickles Auctions, a leading auction house, search activity for EVs is up 30%, and sales are expected to set new records soon.
Despite the challenges — including a predicted spike in oil prices possibly climbing to $200 a barrel — electric vehicles (EVs) continue to gain traction. The Electric Vehicle Council noted a dramatic rise in battery-only EV sales, which nearly doubled compared to the same month last year. In February, EVs made up an impressive 18.6% of all new car sales.
Rohan Martin, CEO of the National Automotive Leasing and Salary Packaging Association, mentioned that the fuel price crisis has intensified demand for EV loans, particularly in suburban areas where commuting distances are longer. Many customers are seeing a direct connection between rising fuel prices and the need for electric alternatives.
Experts agree that electrifying even a fraction of heavy-duty trucks can substantially reduce diesel consumption, freeing up resources for other sectors like agriculture. Currently, heavy trucks account for just 3% of commercial vehicles but are responsible for moving 80% of Australia’s freight.
Driving an electric truck has also been described as a smoother experience. George Eleftheriou, a driver for New Energy Transport, compared it to “driving a limo.” The silent, stress-free nature of electric trucks could reshape perceptions of long-haul driving.
In essence, while the world grapples with escalating fuel prices, Australia stands at the crossroads of a transportation revolution, with electric trucks leading the way toward a more sustainable future.
