Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is moving forward with his “Make America Healthy Again” initiative. This upcoming week, he’s set to meet with leaders from major food companies like General Mills and PepsiCo.
Kennedy has already made some waves in the food industry and has taken steps regarding vaccine policies as part of his role. According to reports, the White House is encouraging these meetings to ensure that department heads connect with the industries they oversee.
At these meetings, Kennedy is likely to discuss concerns about ingredients commonly found in processed foods and sugary drinks, such as seed oils, artificial colors, and preservatives. While some food companies may be open to changes, there may be resistance to eliminating seed oils, which are cheap and widely used.
There’s also growing momentum among state lawmakers to limit sugary and highly processed foods in government food programs, like SNAP. Governors and lawmakers from various states, including Arkansas and Arizona, are advocating for these restrictions.
USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins is collaborating with Kennedy on the initiative, focusing on SNAP restrictions. However, there’s caution from President Trump, who believes that restrictions are often unpopular with the public. Interestingly, Trump has been known to enjoy Diet Coke.
On the vaccine front, Kennedy plans to review the childhood vaccination schedule. He aims to assess the effects of vaccines and other substances like pesticides and microplastics on public health. He has halted the CDC’s flu vaccine campaign, favoring instead a focus on “informed consent” in vaccination, ensuring individuals are aware of potential side effects.
Kennedy is also looking to change the composition of the external committee that advises the FDA and CDC on vaccines, aiming to address conflicts of interest. This committee, known as ACIP, influences vaccine recommendations that typically shape public health policies. He has postponed an upcoming ACIP panel to allow for more public feedback.
Kennedy’s actions and meetings highlight a significant push towards healthier food options and more transparent vaccination policies.
