Richardson International Limited, based in Winnipeg, has made a significant move by agreeing to buy the pasta business of 8th Avenue Food & Provisions. This deal means Richardson is expanding its reach in the U.S. food market, gaining three production plants located in Carrington, North Dakota, New Hope, Minnesota, and Winchester, Virginia. One of the major brands included in this acquisition is Ronzoni, a name many people recognize.
Darwin Sobkow, the President and CEO of Richardson, expressed enthusiasm about this opportunity. He noted that their strength lies in handling durum wheat, and this acquisition allows them to link that expertise directly with pasta production. This move will not only enhance Richardson’s capabilities but also enable them to serve a growing number of customers across North America.
With the acquisition, around 500 employees from 8th Avenue will join the Richardson team. This will bolster their efforts in both retail and foodservice pasta markets, focusing on innovation and growth.
Interestingly, the North American pasta market has been on the rise. A recent report shows that the pasta industry is expected to grow by 3.5% annually, driven by a shift toward convenience foods and healthier options. Analysts believe that companies like Richardson, with established supply chains, are well-positioned to leverage this trend.
The deal will be finalized after passing through regulatory checks, and it’s anticipated to close by the end of this year. BMO Capital Markets is serving as the financial advisor for Richardson, while Koley Jessen is handling legal aspects.
