Tamaqua Welcomes STAR Community Health
Recently, St. Luke’s Miners Health Centers debuted as STAR Community Health Centers in Tamaqua, marking a significant shift in how local health services will be accessed. The centers in Ringtown, Lansford, and Tamaqua embraced the new name at a celebration earlier this week.
Quynh Hicks, the interim executive director of STAR Community Health, highlighted the importance of this change. “In Pennsylvania, STAR is part of 52 Federally Qualified Health Centers that serve about one million people each year,” she noted. Many of these patients previously struggled to get quality healthcare, often ending up in worse conditions.
The goal? To promote preventive care and ensure that everyone has access to essential healthcare services.
Since 2018, the Ringtown center has been a vital healthcare option for the Shenandoah area, serving as the closest facility for many. This center has been helping the community in various forms since 1980, even functioning previously as a satellite of other medical centers.
Dr. Gregory Dobash, who has been a part of this journey, expressed his surprise at the transformation. “I never thought our home practice would evolve into a rural health center or even a Federally Qualified Health Center Look Alike,” he said.
STAR Community Health started in 2019 and now spans the Lehigh Valley and beyond. This expansion reflects a growing awareness of the need for accessible healthcare in underserved areas.
A study from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services shows that Federally Qualified Health Centers like STAR are crucial. They often provide services to populations that are medically underserved or uninsured. This is especially significant post-pandemic, as many individuals are still facing financial challenges that affect their health.
Furthermore, social media reactions indicate strong community support for STAR Community Health. Many residents are sharing their positive experiences, highlighting how these centers have made life-saving care more accessible.
In summary, STAR Community Health is poised to make a lasting impact on healthcare in Tamaqua and surrounding areas. Through expanded services and a commitment to preventive care, they aim to ensure that everyone can receive the medical attention they need.
