Rising Gallstone Cases in Children: Why Early Detection and Lifestyle Changes Are Crucial

New Delhi: Gallstones are no longer just an adult concern. Pediatricians across India are seeing more cases in children, some as young as six. This trend is growing, and experts urge parents to take notice.

Gallstones form in the gallbladder and can be made of cholesterol or bilirubin. Many children might not show symptoms, but they can suffer from severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting if the stones block bile flow.

“We’re seeing a clear uptick in these cases, especially in urban areas,” says Dr. Shandip Kumar Sinha, a pediatric surgeon at Medanta-The Medicity in Gurugram. He attributes this rise to factors like obesity, unhealthy eating habits, genetics, and certain blood disorders.

A survey by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics found that about 1 in 200 children admitted with abdominal pain had gallstones. The risk is higher in kids with sedentary lifestyles and high-fat diets.

Dr. Raman Kumar, Chairman of the Academy of Family Physicians of India, highlights the importance of early diagnosis. “An ultrasound is a straightforward method to spot gallstones. Often, we can manage the condition with diet changes, but surgery may be needed if complications arise,” he explains.

In severe cases, doctors recommend laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a minimally invasive surgery to remove the gallbladder. However, if gallstones are found during assessments for vague symptoms, the choice between watchful waiting and surgery can be challenging. Dr. Sinha stresses that parents must be informed about the potential risks of complications, such as pancreatitis and jaundice.

He adds, “It’s crucial for parents to monitor their children’s diets and activity levels.” Experts recommend promoting a balanced diet filled with fiber, fruits, and vegetables while cutting down on junk food and sugary drinks. Regular exercise and routine health check-ups are also essential, especially for children who may be predisposed to gallstones due to family history.

This shift in gallstone prevalence is alarming. It’s a reminder that children’s health is influenced not just by genetics but also by their environment and lifestyle choices. As Dr. Sinha puts it, “We need to pay attention to what our children eat and how active they are.”

Increasing awareness and preventive measures can help combat this rising trend, ultimately promoting healthier futures for children.
