REDDING, Calif. — The Shasta County Food Bank, part of Dignity Health Connected Living, is facing an overwhelming demand as more people seek food assistance.
Joe Ayer, the Executive Director, notes that the need for food is increasing, largely due to inflation. “We’re seeing about a 19% rise in visitors compared to last year,” he shared. “People from various backgrounds are coming in for help.”
“Since expanding our food bank and adding a front desk, we’ve noticed a significant increase in foot traffic,” Ayer added.
Many of those seeking help are not homeless. They are working individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet. Ayer explained that the rising costs of everyday essentials are affecting everyone, not just those without housing. “People just need a little extra support,” he said.
Ayer stressed that food is moving quickly. “What we have now will be gone soon,” he warned. To keep up with demand, a semi-truck filled with food is expected to arrive from Salt Lake City this week.
