Riverside University High School Delays Classes to Ensure Safe Cleanup After Chemical Spill

MILWAUKEE — Riverside University High School has postponed its first day of classes to September 3 due to ongoing cleanup from a chemical spill.

In a letter to families, Milwaukee Public Schools’ Deputy Superintendent, Eduardo Galván, explained the decision. The cleanup is necessary because the spill may involve old science equipment that contained mercury. While this situation is inconvenient, safety is a priority.

Staff will still report to work, but students will have to wait until Wednesday, September 3, to start their classes. Galván reassured families that the school’s air quality has passed safety tests, though some classrooms will remain closed during the cleanup.

In his message, he expressed gratitude for the community’s support and patience. He looks forward to a productive school year once students return.

The initial school day for other Milwaukee Public Schools remains set for Tuesday, September 2.
