Robert De Niro’s Daughter Airyn Shares Her Journey as a Transgender Woman in Exclusive Interview

Airyn De Niro is ready to share her story. At 29, she is coming out as a trans woman and discussing her journey. This includes starting hormone therapy last November.

In her first interview with Them, Airyn revealed that the 2023 live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” starring Halle Bailey, inspired her. After seeing the film, she took a significant step by booking an appointment at a Black hair salon.

“A big part of my transition is the influence Black women have had on me,” she shared. “Embracing my identity and my Blackness brings me closer to them.”

Born Aaron De Niro, she now sees her transition as an opportunity to be open and honest, especially on social media. “I realized, ‘Maybe it’s not too late for me to start,'” she expressed.

Airyn grew up away from the spotlight of her famous parents. Her father, 81, has won two Oscars and starred in iconic films such as “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull.” Her mother, 72, is a model and actress.

Unlike many children of Hollywood stars, Airyn did not want to rely on her family’s fame. “I’m grateful my parents kept me out of the limelight. They wanted me to have a normal childhood,” she noted. “Success should come on my own merit.”

Addressing her past struggles with self-image, Airyn said, “I never fit the beauty standard. I was often told I was too much of something or not enough of another.” She aims to change that narrative through her visibility as a trans woman.

“There’s a difference between being visible and being seen,” she clarified. “I’ve been visible, but I don’t think I’ve been seen yet.”

Airyn’s journey resonates with many, especially in a time when conversations around gender identity and representation are evolving. According to a 2023 survey by the Trevor Project, 45% of LGBTQ+ youth considered suicide, underscoring the importance of visibility and support in these communities.

By sharing her experience, Airyn hopes to encourage others to embrace their identities and seek acceptance. She is one voice among many in the ongoing dialogue about gender and inclusion.

De Niro has a total of seven children, including Airyn and her twin brother, Julian. She is determined to carve out her own path, representative of her unique journey.
