Rochester Nightclub Shuts Down: Owners Reflect on Their Impact on the City’s Entertainment Legacy

Essex, a popular music venue in Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts, is set to close at the end of February. This announcement came via their Instagram account.

The venue opened in October 2023 and has been a vibrant part of the local music scene. Its owners, Josh Miles, Zach Mikida, and Mack Hartman, will be moving on to manage a larger venue, Anthology, located at 336 East Ave. in the East End.

In an Instagram video, Miles reflected on their experience, saying, “We’ve learned so much since opening Essex and we have loved this venue.” However, he added that “Anthology holds a very important place in Rochester’s entertainment history.” The team is excited to restore and enhance its legacy.

Anthology, which has a capacity of about 1,000 people, first opened in the fall of 2015 but shut down in summer 2022 due to pandemic impacts. It briefly reopened last December for concerts featuring the local band Joywave.

Miles and his partners will lease Anthology from the previous operator, Phil Fitzsimmons. While they have plans to improve the venue—such as adding sound-dampening drapery from Essex—its physical layout will largely remain unchanged.

Anthology has already booked events, including a performance by The Blind Owl Band on March 8 and a collaboration with Anheuser-Busch on March 15, coinciding with Rochester’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

This transition reflects an exciting new chapter for both the owners and the Rochester music scene. Stay tuned for more updates as they revitalize this iconic venue.
