BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — A stunning 10-foot statue of the legendary Tina Turner was unveiled in her hometown on Saturday. This vibrant tribute celebrates the extraordinary life of a woman who transformed into a global icon, known for her electrifying performances and unforgettable songs.
The statue was revealed in a local park in Brownsville, a small town located about an hour from Memphis. Turner spent her childhood in the nearby community of Nutbush, where she attended school as a child and later as a teenager.
Created by sculptor Fred Ajanogha, the statue captures Turner in her energetic pose, microphone in hand and her signature wild hair flowing. Ajanogha aimed to showcase her dynamic stage presence, making the statue a fitting homage to her powerful legacy.
Tina Turner passed away on May 24, 2023, at the age of 83 after a prolonged illness. She was not just a singer but a cultural phenomenon. With hits like “Proud Mary” and “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” she won multiple Grammys and made every performance unforgettable. Her influence reached far and wide, from music legends like Mick Jagger to contemporary stars like Beyoncé.
The unveiling was part of the annual Tina Turner Heritage Days, celebrating her roots in Tennessee. The statue took about a year to create, being sculpted in clay in Atlanta and cast in bronze by a local foundry. Standing roughly 10 feet tall, it commands attention, reminding everyone of Turner’s remarkable journey.
Around 50 generous donors contributed to this project, with Ford Motor Co. leading the charge by donating $150,000. This financial boost connects to Ford’s ongoing commitment to the community as they build an electric truck factory nearby.
Tina’s life story serves as an inspiration for many. Her troubled beginnings only fueled her ascent to greatness. One attendee, Karen Cook from Georgia, expressed her admiration, saying, “She’s a great artist; I love her music. It’s wonderful for the community to celebrate her like this.”
Near the statue, a museum dedicated to Turner sits at the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center. This museum, opened in 2014, is housed in the former Flagg Grove School, where Turner once studied. The school was moved from Nutbush to Brownsville, preserving a piece of history tied to the rock and roll queen.
With this statue, Tina Turner’s legacy will continue to shine bright, inspiring future generations to reach for their dreams.
