Rockford University Student Receives Prestigious Youth Leadership Award: Inspiring Future Generations

Rockford University Senior Honored for Youth Leadership

Jocelyn Solis, a senior at Rockford University, has been recognized with the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award. This prestigious honor comes from the National Association of Secretaries of State, awarded by Illinois Secretary of State, Alexi Giannoulias.

Solis was celebrated for her impactful work with young people. She leads the “In Youth We Trust” program through the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois. This initiative trains teens in grant-making, volunteerism, and leadership. Over the past two years, Solis has helped more than 30 young leaders distribute over $80,000 to support more than 32,000 families in Boone, Winnebago, Stephenson, and Ogle counties.

In addition, Solis mentors first-generation college students at Rockford University. She will speak at the upcoming First-Generation College Student Celebration Dinner in November 2025.

This award celebrates the legacy of Congressman John Lewis, a champion of civil rights and youth empowerment. Giannoulias praised both Solis and fellow recipient Amari’ah Carter from Southern Illinois University for their commitment to service and leadership.

Currently, Illinois is in its third year of participating in the National Association of Secretaries of State’s John Lewis Youth Leadership Award program. Young leaders aged 18 to 25 who demonstrate a strong commitment to community service and leadership can apply. Nominations for the next award cycle will open in fall 2026.

Jocelyn’s achievements highlight the importance of youth leadership in making a difference in communities today. As we face challenges, young voices continue to step up, inspiring change for a better future.
