West Virginia University has kicked off an exciting chapter in its football program with the hiring of Demetrius “Deke” Adams as the new defensive ends coach. Coach Rich Rodriguez expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Deke is a valuable addition to our team. Welcome to the Mountaineers!”
Adams arrives with a wealth of experience—nearly 30 years in coaching, including 19 at the competitive FBS level. His track record is impressive: he has coached for nine programs that reached bowl games and has been instrumental in developing three All-Americans, 14 all-conference players, and ten NFL Draft picks, including two who went in the first round.
Most recently, Adams served as the defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator at Arkansas. Under his direction, the team achieved two bowl victories and set a school record for sacks with 42 in 2022. That same year, his defensive line contributed significantly, accounting for 22 of those sacks. Additionally, Adams helped the team rank among the top in rushing defense and third-down defense nationally.
Statistically, the 2023 team showed further progress, allowing only 357.2 yards per game—its best performance since 2014. This improvement was notable; they dropped their yards per play from 6.46 in 2022 to 5.67, showcasing Adams’ ability to adapt and escalate the team’s defensive strategies.
Adams’ coaching career spans several schools and positions. He started at Jacksonville State, progressed to positions at Pearl River Community College, and has worked at Southern Miss, North Carolina, and many more. His defensive line at Southern Miss in 2009 ranked 18th nationally in sacks, a testament to his coaching prowess.
As a player, Adams was part of the Southern Miss team known for its “Nasty Bunch” defense, finishing his college career with solid stats and earning a place on the Dean’s List throughout his studies.
Adams is not just a coach; he is deeply rooted in the sport and his community. He graduated with degrees in psychology and sports administration and was recently inducted into the Southern Miss M-Club Hall of Fame. Off the field, he and his wife, Alexis Hall, who also excelled in sports as a basketball player, are proud parents of two sons.
With this hire, WVU aims to strengthen its defensive strategies and capitalize on Adams’ extensive experience. Football enthusiasts are eager to see how his impact will unfold in the upcoming season.
