Roki Sasaki, a talented 23-year-old pitcher from Japan, has officially signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He made the announcement on Instagram, expressing his excitement about joining the team. Sasaki was one of the most sought-after pitchers not already in Major League Baseball (MLB), and he will receive a $6.5 million signing bonus.
Before joining the Dodgers, Sasaki had been with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) league. His stats speak for themselves: he has a 2.35 ERA and an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.76. His remarkable performance included a 19-strikeout perfect game in April 2022, showcasing his potential.
Sasaki’s decision to join the Dodgers was not easy. He shared on his Instagram, “It was a very difficult decision,” but he is determined to prove he made the right choice. Given his status as an amateur free agent, Sasaki is limited to signing a minor-league contract, and his signing bonus had to stay within the international bonus pool rules set by MLB.
For the Dodgers to secure Sasaki’s signing bonus, they might need to trade for additional bonus pool space. Recently, they traded outfielder Dylan Campbell to the Philadelphia Phillies to gain more funds. The Dodgers can only trade bonus pool space in increments of $250,000, so they may need to make a few transactions to meet the $6.5 million total.
What makes Sasaki stand out is his unique pitching style. He combines high velocity with a devastating forkball, making him a challenge for hitters. Though injuries have limited his innings in the past, the Dodgers believe he has the potential to be a key player on their pitching staff.
This coming season, the Dodgers will likely use a six-man rotation. With other star pitchers like Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the lineup, they aim to manage workloads effectively. Sasaki, with his previous experience and skill, fits right into this rotation, allowing the Dodgers to protect his arms while maximizing performance.
Sasaki was part of the Japanese national team that won the World Baseball Classic in 2023, and he looks forward to stepping onto the field with established stars. In the end, the Dodgers’ history of success and the opportunity to play alongside Ohtani were too appealing to pass up.
