The 240-bed hospital in Rolla is set to expand its emergency department significantly. This $60 million project aims to enhance patient care by adding larger rooms, private spaces for sensitive cases like sexual assault and mental health treatment, as well as updated labs and diagnostic facilities. The expansion is slated to open its doors in 2027.
This investment comes as many rural hospitals face financial hurdles. In Missouri alone, 21 hospitals have shut down in the last decade, particularly in rural areas. Changes in Medicare and Medicaid rules have raised concerns among health providers, as these programs are vital for rural hospitals’ survival. As a result, regional hospitals are having to shoulder more responsibilities.
Despite the challenging landscape, Phelps Health reported a positive fiscal year, with a significant portion of its patients relying on Medicare or Medicaid. CEO Jason Shenefield acknowledged the constant struggle with federal payments but emphasized the hospital’s commitment to operational improvements.
When Jenece Martin joined the board of trustees in 2022, she received valuable feedback from the community. Many highlighted the need for more emergency room space. This insight played a key role in shaping the expansion plans, especially after the stress the hospital faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Phelps Health experienced near-capacity levels while caring for COVID-19 patients, and the existing facilities were not optimally designed for such challenges.
Keri Heavin, the chief nursing and operations officer, noted that the new design anticipates future health crises, ensuring safe care environments during potential outbreaks. The two floors being added above the new emergency department will provide room for future growth, including offices and patient care areas.
Overall, this expansion reflects a proactive approach to address the growing healthcare needs in the community. With changing healthcare dynamics, especially in rural areas, such investments are vital for ensuring residents receive the care they deserve.
