A Russian drone crashed into an apartment building in Romania, injuring two people. This incident happened overnight between May 28 and 29, when Russian drone attacks resumed against civilian targets in Ukraine near the Romania border. The Romanian defense ministry reported that one drone crossed into its airspace and landed on a rooftop in the city of Galați, causing a fire.
Local emergency responders treated two individuals with minor injuries. As a safety measure, Romania scrambled two F-16 jets after detecting the drones.
This was the first time a Russian drone has hit a residential building in Romania since the start of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022. Previously, there have been numerous drone incursions. Back in September, Romania reported similar airspace violations, prompting military responses at that time as well.
Other NATO members bordering Ukraine, such as Poland and the Baltic states, also face threats from drones. Just last month, Latvia witnessed political turmoil after drones strayed into its airspace. The former prime minister criticized her defense minister for inadequate anti-drone measures, highlighting the vulnerabilities in the region’s air defenses.
Experts have noted that such incidents are becoming more common as tensions rise. According to a recent NATO report, nearly 70% of member countries bordering Ukraine have experienced increased drone activity. This raises concerns about the security of NATO’s eastern flank.
Incidents involving drones, while causing limited damage, are alarming for many in these countries, which are navigating new threats in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
