Rowan University’s President Appointed Chairman of N.J. Chamber Foundation: A New Era of Leadership!

Dr. Ali A. Houshmand, president of Rowan University and a strong advocate for accessible education, has been appointed as the chairman of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce Foundation. His leadership comes at a crucial time when many young adults in New Jersey need more avenues to succeed.

Houshmand follows Steven Rose from Passaic County Community College, who held the position for six years. He sees his role as vital for supporting underserved students. “Education can change lives. Helping students find their path is essential,” he shared.

The foundation offers programs that guide high school students in exploring careers and developing skills for success. They also help train educators and promote workforce readiness throughout the state.

Houshmand knows the challenges of accessing education firsthand. Growing up in Iran as one of ten children in a family of hardworking, but illiterate, parents, he turned to education to overcome poverty. He earned advanced degrees in engineering and statistics from the University of Essex and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Since taking the helm at Rowan University in 2012, he has focused on making higher education accessible and affordable. His efforts have led to partnerships that connect education with the needs of the workforce. Under his leadership, Rowan has gained a strong reputation and expanded its presence.

“Dr. Houshmand’s life story reflects the mission of our foundation,” said Donna Custard, president of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce Foundation. She emphasizes the importance of equipping students from underrepresented communities with the tools they need to thrive.

Reflecting on the past leadership, Custard expressed gratitude for Steve Rose’s guidance during a period of significant growth. Houshmand’s leadership is expected to build upon this momentum and reach even more students.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 25% of all undergraduate students were from low-income families in 2020. This highlights the ongoing need for programs aimed at helping students access education and better their lives.
