Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has called on the Government of India to award the Bharat Ratna posthumously to the legendary theatre artist Ratan Thiyam. He believes this honor would rightly celebrate Thiyam’s vast influence on Indian arts and culture.
During a recent parliamentary session, Sanajaoba spoke about Thiyam’s legacy as a monumental figure in Indian theatre, especially from Manipur. He shared how Thiyam combined traditional Manipuri styles with modern elements, earning international acclaim for his unique productions.
With over fifty years in the industry, Thiyam created significant works like Chakravyuha, Uttar Priyadarshi, and Ritu Samhara. He wore many hats—acting as a director and painter, showcasing his diverse talent.
Thiyam was also a pioneer; he was the first from Manipur to graduate from the National School of Drama, later taking leadership roles there.
His accolades include the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, highlighting his impact on Indian theatre. Sanajaoba argued that awarding Thiyam the Bharat Ratna would rightfully acknowledge his contributions, preserving his legacy in India’s cultural narrative.
Thiyam’s work is often discussed on social media, where users share memories and celebrate his influence. In recent years, surveys indicate a growing interest in regional arts, showing that Thiyam’s impact resonates with new generations.
