During a discussion in parliament, Sanajaoba emphasized Thiyam’s remarkable impact as a visionary in Indian theatre. Hailing from Manipur, Thiyam’s work has gained international acclaim by blending traditional Manipuri styles with modern theatrical expressions.
Thiyam’s impressive career spanned over fifty years, during which he created several major productions like Chakravyuha, Uttar Priyadarshi, and Ritu Samhara. He was not only a talented director but also a skilled painter, showcasing his diverse artistic abilities.
Notably, Thiyam was the first individual from Manipur to graduate from the prestigious National School of Drama. He served as its director from 1987 to 1989 and later as chairman from 2013 to 2016.
In recognition of his contributions, Thiyam received several distinguished awards, including the Padma Shri and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. His legacy in Indian theatre is undeniable. Sanajaoba stressed that honoring Thiyam with the Bharat Ratna would be a deserved recognition of his lifelong dedication to enriching the nation’s cultural heritage.
