Rucks on Main Breaks Records: 203 Participants Unite to Donate 12,700 Pounds of Food!

TEMPLE, Texas – This past Memorial Day weekend, hundreds gathered in downtown Temple for the Rucks on Main march. Participants donned rucksacks, many filled with nonperishable food.

The military-themed six-mile hike aimed to honor service members and support local food banks. This year saw a record-breaking turnout of 203 marchers, donating an impressive 12,700 pounds of food.

Jason Deckman, the event’s organizer, expressed pride in the turnout. “We never reached over 200 marchers before,” he said. “This incredible support shows how our community cares.” Some donations will go to Temple Christian Outreach and Feed My Sheep.

The Rucks on Main event happens twice a year, during Memorial Day and Veterans Day weekends, fostering a spirit of unity. Deckman attributes its growth to lessons veterans learn in the military, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and self-improvement.

“Always strive to improve,” he said. “Feedback and community support have driven our growth.”

For many veterans, Memorial Day holds profound significance. Participants often carry the names and photos of lost comrades. “A lot of veterans have lost someone,” Deckman noted, echoing the sentiment that speaking a name keeps their memory alive.

As Deckman put it, “Who do you ruck for?” This question lingers in the minds of marchers, reminding them of the personal connections that drive their mission.

Looking ahead, the next Rucks on Main is set for Veterans Day weekend.

These events not only bring awareness to veteran sacrifices but also reflect a growing trend: the rising importance of community in charitable efforts. According to a recent survey by the National Conference on Citizenship, 60% of Americans believe strong community ties improve overall well-being. Events like Rucks on Main are a testament to that belief, showing the impact of coming together for a common cause.
