Rugby High School DECA recently wrapped up its annual Food Drive, collecting over 1,000 items for the Pierce County Food Pantry. This effort took place from November 5-14 and aimed to support local families in need.
Students and staff rallied together to donate items like food, hygiene products, and cleaning supplies. A fun competition kicked off between 14 classrooms, encouraging them to see which Period 1 class could give the most. Dan Seykora’s eighth-grade math class emerged as the top donor group.
The DECA members, who are dedicated to leadership and community service, spearheaded this drive. DECA focuses on skills in marketing, management, hospitality, and finance.
“Our goal is to support our community and show we care,” said Abby Hager, RHS DECA Vice President of Marketing. She emphasized that creating these Thanksgiving baskets was a meaningful way to give back.
Craig Erickson, the DECA adviser, noted, “This project showcases what students can achieve when they unite for a cause.” He expressed pride in their compassion and commitment to helping families in the area.
Thanks to everyone involved, donations will ensure that families have essential supplies this holiday season.
Rugby High School DECA formed in fall 2023 and has already grown significantly, now ranking as the ninth largest chapter in North Dakota. There are more than 800 DECA members across 27 high schools in the state. The officer team includes President Carter Teigen, Vice President Abby Hager, and members Opal Hackel, Avery Harmel, Sidney Peterson, and Beth Schmaltz.
Supporting local initiatives like this highlights how communities come together, especially during tough times. Studies show that community engagement can foster stronger connections among residents, which is more important now than ever. It’s encouraging to see young people taking active roles in creating positive change.
