Russia Arrests Suspected Ukrainian Agent Linked to Deadly Car Explosion That Killed General

Russian authorities recently detained a man they claim is linked to the car explosion that killed General Yaroslav Moskalik, a high-ranking Russian military officer. This incident took place in Balashikha, just east of Moscow.

According to the Federal Security Service (FSB), the suspect allegedly purchased the vehicle that exploded. His nationality is still in question, although he reportedly has a residence permit in Ukraine. The FSB also accuses him of placing an explosive device in the car, which they say was detonated remotely from Ukraine. Video evidence shows damaged electronics reportedly found at the explosion site.

General Moskalik served as the deputy head of the Main Operations Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces. Influential military blogs suggest that he was close to the car when it erupted but not inside it, a report that CNN has not independently verified. Images released by authorities appear to show the suspect driving a dark green Volkswagen that matches the license plates found at the explosion scene.

Videos from TASS show the suspect being transported in custody and claiming he was recruited by Ukrainian intelligence. However, it remains unclear if he made this statement under pressure.

No group has taken responsibility for the explosion yet. CNN has reached out to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry for comments regarding the alleged connections to Ukraine.

This event coincided with a meeting between U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin, aimed at discussing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Initially, optimism was expressed about a potential peace deal. However, the day after, skepticism surfaced as President Donald Trump questioned Putin’s intentions for peace, contemplating new sanctions due to continued missile attacks on civilian areas in Ukraine.
