Russia Emphasizes Energy Ties with India: A Strategic Partnership for National Interests

New Delhi: Russia’s energy relationship with India is closely aligned with India’s national interests, said Russian envoy Denis Alipov. He emphasized that trade between the two countries is growing. His comments came shortly after former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him that India would stop buying Russian crude oil.

When asked about India’s plans regarding Russian oil, Alipov noted, “That’s up to the Indian government.” He underlined that India is prioritizing its national interests in this matter. “Our cooperation in the energy sector aligns with those interests,” he added. In response to Trump’s remarks, India stated that it is diversifying its energy sources based on market needs.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also addressed Trump’s comments, highlighting India’s commitment to protecting consumer interests amid fluctuating energy prices. Jaiswal said that India’s energy policies focus on ensuring stable prices and secure supplies. He reiterated that India is broadening its energy sourcing to adapt to market conditions.

Despite Western sanctions, India’s ongoing purchases of petroleum from Russia have stirred tensions with Washington. Trump claimed that Modi informed him about plans to halt oil purchases, predicting that while India may not stop immediately, progress is underway. “It’s a process that will be completed soon,” he remarked.

This situation highlights the delicate balance India must maintain between fostering robust energy ties with Russia and navigating relations with the U.S. According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, 68% of Indians believe that energy independence is crucial for the country’s growth. This statistic underscores the importance of diversifying energy sources for India’s economic strategy.

Energy experts suggest that India’s decisions in this arena will shape its geopolitical stance in the coming years. As geopolitical tensions rise, India’s strategy could influence its relationships with other major players on the world stage.
