Russian National Arrested for Smuggling Dangerous Biological Materials into Boston: What You Need to Know

BOSTON – A Russian national was arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle clawed frog embryos into the United States.

Kseniia Petrova, 31, charged with smuggling, was taken into custody on February 16, 2025, after arriving at Logan International Airport from Paris. Customs agents detained her when a canine alerted them to her checked bag.

Inside her bag, they found biological items: a foam box with frog embryos in microcentrifuges and other embryonic samples. All biological materials entering the U.S. must be declared and require a permit.

Initially, Petrova denied having any biological material. However, she later admitted to carrying it. In a sworn interview, she claimed she wasn’t aware of the declaration requirement. But text messages on her phone revealed that her colleagues warned her about customs regulations and the need for permission to bring such items into the country:

– “If you bring samples or antibody back, make sure you get the permission.”
– “What is your plan to pass American Customs with samples?”

In another chat, when asked about her customs strategy, Petrova joked, “I won’t be able to swallow them,” indicating she had no plan.

Following her detention, she agreed to withdraw her entry application and was taken into custody. Petrova previously worked at the Institute of Genetic Biology in Moscow and held a bioinformatics position focused on genetic disorders.

The charge of smuggling goods can lead to severe penalties, including up to 20 years in prison, supervised release, and fines reaching $250,000.

Experts note that the increase in biological smuggling cases reflects growing concerns about biosecurity and the illegal trade of endangered species. According to a 2022 report by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, incidents of wildlife trafficking have surged by over 30% in recent years.
