‘Rust’ Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Granted Parole: What You Need to Know

A former movie armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was released from a New Mexico prison after serving 18 months for involuntary manslaughter. This charge was linked to the tragic shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust in 2021.

Gutierrez-Reed is now back in Bullhead City, Arizona, under parole supervision. Her plea deal also includes probation for carrying a firearm into a liquor establishment.

On that fateful day, Alec Baldwin, the film’s lead actor and co-producer, was practicing a scene when a gun he held discharged, leading to Hutchins’ death and injuring director Joel Souza. In March 2024, Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of manslaughter for allegedly bringing live ammunition to the set and neglecting safety protocols.

Interestingly, Gutierrez-Reed was found not guilty of tampering with evidence, and she now has an appeal pending. Prosecutors argued that her carelessness contributed to the tragedy. Weeks before filming started, she had a separate incident where she took a gun into a Santa Fe bar, a place where firearms are prohibited.

As part of her parole, she’s required to undergo mental health evaluations and cannot possess firearms. Baldwin faced similar charges, but they were dismissed after accusations of withheld evidence emerged during the trial.

The filming of Rust was ultimately completed in Montana, and the movie just hit theaters this month. This incident has sparked widespread discussions about safety measures on film sets. According to a recent survey by the American Film Institute, about 70% of industry professionals are pushing for stricter regulations and training in gun safety.

The tragic events surrounding Rust serve as a reminder of the importance of safety on set, a lesson that has resonated throughout the filmmaking community.
