Rutgers Baseball Takes a Trip to USC
This weekend, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights baseball team heads to California to face the No. 17 USC Trojans at Dedeaux Field. This is a special moment, marking the first time these teams will meet and the first trip for Rutgers to California.
The Scarlet Knights (22-23, 9-12) have found some momentum recently, winning their last two Big Ten series, including two out of three games against Ohio State. Meanwhile, the Trojans (34-12, 16-8) are riding high after sweeping Purdue at home last weekend.
Fans can catch all three games on B1G+ or follow live updates on Twitter at @RutgersBaseball. Live stats are available here.
The Roster
Rutgers is bringing a strong and diverse roster to the field. Of the 39 players, 15 are returning veterans, and 24 are newcomers, which includes 11 freshmen and 13 transfers. Head Coach Steve Owens, in his seventh season, has led the team to four straight winning seasons. The coaching staff has also seen changes, with former Virginia Tech pitching coach Ryan Fecteau stepping in as associate head coach.
Key Players to Watch
Peyton Bonds is a standout hitter for Rutgers, with a .358 batting average, leading the team in hits and runs. His impressive performance was highlighted by a 121 mph double at Illinois, showcasing his power.
The catching team of Matt Chatelle and Trey Wells is another strong point. Both players bat over .300 and have been crucial in maintaining solid defense, effectively throwing out 22 baserunners this season.
On the pitching side, young talents like Jordan Savinon and Jacob Pederson have shown promise. Savinon boasts a 2.00 ERA, while Pederson holds a 4.63 ERA, combining for 50.1 innings pitched and 47 strikeouts.
Defensive Strengths
Rutgers prides itself on defense, maintaining one of the best fielding percentages in the nation at .976 for the past four years. This consistency is rare, shared by only five other teams. Notably, former players Danny DiGeorgio and Josh Kuroda-Grauer were recognized as All-Americans during their tenures.
Path to the MLB
Rutgers has also made a name for itself in player development. The program has produced a top-three round pick in the MLB Draft for three consecutive years. In total, 16 players have been drafted or signed by Major League teams since 2021.
As Rutgers steps onto the field this weekend against USC, fans are eager to see how these players perform. It’s not just a game; it’s a chance for the Scarlet Knights to make their mark on a national stage.
