Brian Strom, chancellor of Rutgers Health, has been named “Educator of the Year” by the Research & Development Council of New Jersey. This honor highlights his significant role in transforming medical education in the state.
Strom will receive this award at the Edison Patent Awards on November 20 at Bell Works in Holmdel, N.J. This event is New Jersey’s premier celebration of invention and innovation, honoring six standout individuals and recognizing 12 patents from local companies. Notably, two Rutgers engineering teams will also be awarded for their research work.
“The Edison Patent Awards celebrate those whose research and inventions bolster New Jersey’s economy,” said Virginie Maillard, chair of the R&D Council. “Each year emphasizes that innovation is essential for progress.”
The Research & Development Council of New Jersey fosters collaboration among industry, academia, and government to enhance education in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). In honoring Strom, officials acknowledged his leadership in uniting the state’s medical and health schools, greatly benefiting students and improving care delivery.
Strom is among five other honorees known for their impactful work. Robert Cohen, John Crowley, Craig Arnold, and startup co-founders Nathaniel Banks and Yidian Liu will also be recognized. “These leaders show how innovation can change lives and strengthen research infrastructure,” noted Kim Case, the council’s executive director.
Strom expressed his gratitude for this recognition and credited his dedicated faculty and trainees. His leadership has been pivotal since the integration of the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey into Rutgers in 2013. This merger has positioned Rutgers Health as a leading academic healthcare center nationwide.
Strom is a pioneer in pharmacoepidemiology, a field that studies the effectiveness of drugs in populations. He also helped establish the International Clinical Epidemiology Network, supporting the creation of epidemiology programs in medical schools worldwide.
Earlier this year, Strom was featured on NJBIZ’s 2025 “Power 100” list, highlighting his influence in healthcare leadership.
This award not only celebrates individual achievements but also reflects the ongoing commitment to innovation in New Jersey, making strides in healthcare and education for a better future.
