Many families are feeling the pinch due to recent changes in federal SNAP benefits. To help, RWJBarnabas Health is stepping in. This holiday season, they’re distributing 4,175 turkeys and over 37.6 tons of fresh produce through food drives across New Jersey.
In 2023 alone, RWJBarnabas Health invested nearly $20 million in local food programs. They plan to add another $7 million in 2026. A notable effort was a $1 million donation to support 14 feeding organizations during a recent government shutdown. Their CEO, Mark E. Manigan, emphasizes their commitment: “Food and health are inseparable. Supporting families facing food insecurity defines who we are.”
This season, RWJBarnabas Health is collaborating with 22 community organizations, including health centers across the state. Some partners include the Monmouth Family Health Center in Long Branch and the Newark Community Health Center in Newark. They are also working with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey to distribute even more food, including 344 turkeys and 315 chickens.
The need for such initiatives is significant. A recent study from the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicates that nearly 10% of New Jersey residents experience food insecurity. These food drives are not just about meals; they’re about providing hope and stability to families in difficult times.
